Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between seeing a counsellor, psychologist and clinical psychologist? Which should I see?+
The main differences between the three come down to level of training, ability to diagnose, and Medicare rebate eligibility.

A counsellor works with clients experiencing grief, trauma, anxiety, depression, life transitions, and relational challenges, often using an integrated approach tailored to each client.

A psychologist is trained in psychological theory and registered with AHPRA, able to diagnose mental health conditions and support more acute or complex presentations. Clients with a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) are eligible for a Medicare rebate.

A clinical psychologist holds postgraduate training (Master's degree and doctorate) and specialises in complex trauma, personality disorders, and more acute conditions, with a higher Medicare rebate available under an MHTP.
Do I need a referral to make an appointment?+
No, you do not need a referral to make an appointment with one of our counsellors.

However, if you would like to see a psychologist or clinical psychologist and be eligible for a Medicare rebate, you must get a referral from your GP for a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP), which entitles you to a number of rebated sessions in a calendar year.

Alternatively, you can book to see a psychologist or clinical psychologist without a referral.
Can I receive a Medicare rebate?+
You can only receive a Medicare rebate when you see a psychologist or clinical psychologist with an eligible Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your GP.
How much do appointments cost and can I use private health insurance?+
All fees are for a 50-minute counselling session.
  Individual Couple Family
Standard $100 $115 $130
Health Care Card $60 $70 $85
Psychologist fees vary by practitioner. Please refer to the individual psychologist's profile in Our Team for a full breakdown of their fees.

Private health insurance can be used when seeing a counsellor or a psychologist. To understand your level of cover and rebate eligibility, you are encouraged to check your health insurance policy, as different insurers and plans have varying levels of coverage.
Do I need a GP referral to see a psychologist?+
If you would like to receive a Medicare rebate, then yes, you will need a referral from your GP. If you do not wish to go through Medicare, then no, you do not need a GP referral.
I have a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Can I use it to see a counsellor?+
Mental Health Treatment Plans (MHTP) can only be used to see a psychologist or clinical psychologist. An MHTP cannot be used to see a counsellor.
Do your psychologists and counsellors bulk-bill?+
No, our psychologists and counsellors are not able to bulk-bill.

If cost is a barrier to accessing the support you need, please speak with our reception team about options available to help make seeing a psychologist or counsellor more affordable.
Is financial assistance available?+
We offer discounted rates to clients holding a valid Health Care Card, for both counselling and psychology sessions. Please note that this discount cannot be used in conjunction with a Medicare rebate under a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP).

If cost is still a barrier to accessing the support you need, please speak with our reception team about other options to help make counselling or psychology more affordable.
Can I do my session over telehealth, or do I need to come in person?+
We offer both telehealth and in-person sessions with all of our counsellors.

Please check each individual psychologist's profile or speak with our reception team directly, as our psychologists' availability for telehealth and in-person sessions may vary.
How frequently would I need to see my counsellor or psychologist?+
Session frequency varies depending on each individual's level of need and their goals. Your counsellor or psychologist will discuss this with you in your first session.

Most people begin with weekly or fortnightly sessions, and frequency can be adjusted as they make progress.
Do you offer counselling sessions in other languages?+
We offer counselling to support clients from a range of cultural backgrounds, including offering sessions in Mandarin and Cantonese.
